EVANSTON, Ill, May 5, 2008/Manufacturers’ News, Inc/-- Industrial employment in Arizona dropped close to 1% over the past 12 months according to the 2008 Arizona Manufacturers Directory, a compilation of state industry published annually by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. The industrial directory reports the state lost 1,670 industrial jobs from March 2007 to March 2008—a smaller loss than MNI reported lost in the state during the 2006-2007 period, and a smaller percentage lost than the 2% industrial job decline posted by the U.S. as a whole during the 2007-2008 period.
According to earlier MNI reports, Arizona gained 1,189 manufacturing jobs between 2005 and 2006, but then lost another 1.1% between 2006 and 2007.
“Arizona’s stronghold in the aviation and defense industries have offset some of the losses felt by sectors more vulnerable to outsourcing such as electronics and industrial machinery,” said Thomas Dubin, President of the Illinois-based firm which has been surveying U.S. industry since 1912. “However, the state is not immune to the consolidation and increased technology currently contributing to industrial employment declines across the nation.”
Manufacturers’ News reports Arizona is home to 6,004 manufacturers employing 240,227 workers. Arizona ranks 28th in the nation for number of manufacturers and 26th for jobs.
MNI reports 87% of Arizona’s industrial jobs are located in Maricopa and Pima Counties. Maricopa County represents 72% of the state’s manufacturing jobs, with 3,913 companies employing 173,954, down 1,152 jobs and down 85 manufacturers over the past 12 months. Pima County is home to another 927 companies, employing 35,591 workers, down 1,011 or 2.8%, but with no significant change in the number of manufacturers.
MNI’s city data shows Phoenix manufacturers employ 86,249 of the state’s industrial workers, or 40%, up a third of a percent or 286 jobs over the past 12 months. MNI reports Phoenix is among the top 50 manufacturing cities in the nation, its 1,883 manufacturers ranking the city 4th in the nation for number of plants and 9th in the nation for industrial jobs. Tucson ranks second in the state for employment with 33,641 jobs, down 3% from a year ago, while Tempe is third in the state with 21,919 industrial workers, up 2.2%. Chandler accounts for 20,318 jobs, down 9.1% after job cuts were seen at the city’s Intel Corp. location. Scottsdale accounts for 13,061 of the state’s workers, up 1.1% over the year.
Manufacturers’ News reports transportation equipment manufacturing is the state’s leading sector, with 32,939 industrial jobs, up 2.4% over the past 12 months. Electronics manufacturing accounts for another 26,794 jobs, down 8.5% over the year, while fabricated metal products manufacturing employs 26,497 Arizona workers, down 215 jobs.
Other sectors losing employment include textiles/apparel, down 3%; lumber/wood, down 8%; rubber and miscellaneous plastics, down 5.4%; and industrial machinery and equipment, down 6.7%.
Employment gains were seen in the food products manufacturing, up 1%; printing and publishing, up 4.2%; stone, clay, glass and concrete, up 4.3% and primary metals manufacturing, up 4.5%.
