EVANSTON, Ill, September 22, 2008/Manufacturers’ News, Inc./-- Industrial employment in New York dropped 1.8% over the past 12 months according to the 2009 New York Manufacturers Register, a compilation of state industry published annually by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. The Register reports New York lost 14,976 industrial jobs from July 2007 to July 2008, continuing the decline the state has seen over the past several years.
According to earlier MNI reports, New York’s industrial employment declined by 2.5% between July 2005 and July 2006, and then posted another drop of 3% from July 2006 to July 2007.
“As with the entire nation, New York’s industrial employment is suffering due to automation, mergers and outsourcing,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912.
Manufacturers’ News reports New York is home to 18,424 manufacturers employing 813,052 workers, ranking 2nd in the US for number of industrial jobs. New York’s losses are in line with those seen across the Mid-Atlantic and New England with New Jersey’s industrial jobs down 2%, Connecticut’s down 1.3% and Pennsylvania’s down 1.2%.
According to the 2009 Register, employment losses were felt across most sectors. Printing and publishing accounts for the most industrial jobs in the state with 138,012 listed in the new edition, with no significant change reported over the year. The industrial machinery and equipment sector accounts for 89,822 jobs, down 1.4% over the past twelve months. Electronics manufacturing accounts for 78,391 jobs and is down the most at 5.1%, following layoffs at Continental AG’s Elma plant, and the closure of Ramp Industries in Binghamton, among others.
Other sectors losing jobs include transportation equipment, down 4.9%; food products, down 4.6%; rubber and plastics products, down 3.2% and chemicals and allied products was down 3% following the closure of a Brooklyn-based Pfizer pharmaceutical plant. Textiles ands apparel manufacturing employment fell 2.6%, due partially to layoffs at fabric manufacturer Albany International. Employment in fabricated metal manufacturing was down 2.3%, according to MNI.
According to the industrial directory, the New York Metro Area, including the New York City exurbs account for 429,999 jobs or 53% of the state, down 6,943 jobs or 1.6% over the year. The Western region of the state accounts for the 2nd most at 212,375 jobs, down 5,097 or 2.3% over the year. Rochester and Buffalo represent 38% of these jobs with Rochester home to 52,191 workers, down 1.8% following automotive supplier Valeo’s closure of its wiper blade manufacturing facility, and Buffalo home to 27,361, down 3.6% over the year. Central New York is home to 114,117 industrial workers, down 2,812 or 2.4% over the year. Syracuse accounts for 11,399 of these jobs, down 3.7% over the year. The Upstate/Adirondack region accounts for 56,567 of the state’s jobs, with no significant change posted over the past twelve months.
