EVANSTON, Ill, November 24th, 2008/Manufacturers’ News, Inc./--Industrial employment in Nevada remained stable over the past twelve months, according to the 2009 Nevada Manufacturers Directory, a compilation of state industry published annually by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI (http://www.manufacturersnews.com) reports Nevada gained 291 industrial jobs or a half percent from October 2007 to October 2008, preserving the job gains of the past several years.
According to earlier MNI reports, Nevada saw a 1.4% increase in industrial jobs between October 2006 to 2007, and a 4.1% gain over MNI’s 2005-2006 survey period.
“While most other states have been losing manufacturing jobs to technology, automation and outsourcing, Nevada’s natural resources and its unique stronghold in the gaming industry have helped the state increase exports and retain industrial facilities,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing firm, which has been surveying industrial sectors since 1912.
Recent government reports state Nevada’s exports to world markets increased 182% over the past five years, the second largest percentage gain in the nation.
According to Manufacturers News, Nevada is home to 2,020 manufacturers employing 63,745 workers. MNI profiles manufacturers of all sizes, including small, start-up companies with just a few employees.
MNI reports the gaming industry accounts for 3,922 of the state’s jobs, up 5.7%, while signs and advertising specialties employ another 2,537 workers, up 3.7% over the year. Fabricated metals manufacturing accounts for 5,774 jobs, up 7.8%. Other sectors to gain jobs include rubber and miscellaneous plastics, up 9.5%; food products, up 9%; furniture/fixtures, up 7.5%; textiles/apparel up 2.8%; paper/allied products, up 2.2% and electronics manufacturing, up 1%.
Metal mining represents 7,344 of Nevada’s industrial jobs, down 4.2% over the year, Other sectors losing jobs over the survey year include transportation equipment, down 11%; stone/clay/glass, down 7.3%; lumber/wood, down 5.5%; printing/publishing, down 4.9%; chemicals/allied products, down 3.2% and industrial machinery and equipment, down 1.8%.
MNI’s city data shows Las Vegas is the state’s industrial capital with 17,457 industrial jobs, down 1.4% over the year. Second-ranked Reno accounts for 10,547 of the state’s manufacturing jobs, up 1% over the past twelve months, while third-ranked Sparks reported a loss of 3.4% and currently accounts for 5,357 of the state’s jobs. North Las Vegas is home to 5,315 of the state’s industrial jobs, up 1%, while Henderson is home to 4,730 workers, down 1.9%.
