EVANSTON, Ill, February 25, 2009/Manufacturers’ News, Inc./-- Industrial employment in New Jersey fell 2.5% over the past twelve months according to the 2009 New Jersey Manufacturers Register, a compilation of state industry published annually by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI (http://www.manufacturersnews.com) reports New Jersey lost 11,724 industrial jobs from December 2007 to December 2008, continuing the slide the state has seen over the past several years.

Manufacturers’ News reports New Jersey is home to 10,355 manufacturers employing 451,389 workers. New Jersey’s losses reflect those seen in other Mid-Atlantic States, with New York’s industrial employment down 1.8% and Pennsylvania’s down 1.2%, according to earlier MNI reports. Manufacturers’ News data shows 9% of the state’s losses were due to companies moving to other states, with 42 companies employing 1,038 relocating to other parts of the country.

“As with the entire nation, weakening demand continues to hit many of New Jersey’s core sectors, while the faltering housing market has affected industries such as wood products, furniture and building products,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912.

According to MNI, New Jersey’s largest industrial sector by employment is chemical and allied products, with 78,611 of the state’s jobs, down 3.9% over the year, due partially to the closure of KIK Custom Products. Printing and publishing ranks second with 54,331 jobs, down 2.1% in 2008, while third-ranked electronics represents 42,984 of the state’s manufacturing jobs, up 3% over the past twelve months.

Job losses were seen across all sectors over the year and included furniture/fixtures, down 14.5%; paper/allied products, down 10%; and rubber and miscellaneous plastics, down 8.8%, spurred by the closure of Survivor Technologies in Hillside, among others. Lumber and wood fell 8%; transportation equipment was down 7.6%; primary metals down 7.3%; stone, clay and glass down 4.5%; textiles/apparel down 4.4%, and fabricated metal products down 3.2%, following the closure of Griffin Pipe, a 200-year old iron foundry in Florence. Industrial machinery and equipment was down 1.4%, according to MNI.

Employment in the instruments and related products sector as well as food products manufacturing remained steady over the year, according to MNI.

According to MNI, Northeast New Jersey accounts for 305,826 of the state’s jobs, or 68% of the state’s industrial employment, down 2.3% over the year. Northwest New Jersey represents 58,091 of the state’s industrial employment, down 3.2% over the past twelve months. Southwest New Jersey is home to 49,494 of the state’s workers, down 3.8% over the year, while Southeast New Jersey saw employment drop 1.4% over the year and currently accounts for 37,978 of New Jersey’s industrial jobs.

Newark is home to the most industrial jobs in New Jersey, accounting for 13,536 jobs, down 2.5% over the year. Moorestown accounts for 7,701 jobs, down 5.2%. Industrial jobs in Clifton have remained steady over the year and currently accounts for 7,322 jobs. Fourth-ranked Edison accounts for 7,059 of the state’s jobs, down 5.2%, while Piscataway is home to 6,542 industrial workers, with employment up 1.3%.
