EVANSTON, Ill, September 10th, 2009 /Manufacturers’ News, Inc./-- Industrial employment in Massachusetts fell 6.4% over the past twenty-four months according to the 2010 Massachusetts Manufacturers Register®, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. MNI reports Massachusetts lost 25,496 industrial jobs over the past twenty-four months with 13,374 industrial jobs lost between July 2007 and July 2008 and 12,122 jobs from 2008 to July of this year
Manufacturers’ News reports Massachusetts is now home to 9,131 manufacturers employing 372,757 workers. . “As with the entire nation, the recession continues to affect Massachusetts’s core sectors,” says Tom Dubin, President of the Evanston, IL-based publishing company, which has been surveying industry since 1912. “However, the state’s educated workforce and its stronghold in emerging biotech fields should help lay the groundwork for recovery,”
Electronic products manufacturing remains the state’s top industrial sector, accounting for 52,098 of the state’s jobs, down 1.6% over the past twelve months following the closures of electronic parts makers Jabil Circuit and Plexus Corp. Second-ranked instruments and related products employs 46,781, and is one of the few sectors to gain jobs, up 1.7% over the year. Industrial machinery and equipment manufacturing accounts for 45,828 jobs, down 7.3%, partially due to layoffs at Varian Semiconductor, which manufactures computer chip making tools.
Most industrial sectors in Massachusetts lost jobs within the past year and included paper products, down 9.7%; textiles/apparel down 9.2%; printing/publishing down 7.1%; lumber/wood down 5.4%; fabricated metals down 4.2%; chemicals down 4.1%; rubber/plastics down 3.4%; primary metals down 3.4%; and stone/clay/glass down 1.3%. Food products manufacturing saw an increase of 1.7% while employment remained steady in the transportation equipment and furniture/fixtures sectors.
Bright spots for the state include the opening of Millipore Corp’s bioprocess manufacturing facility in Danvers, which will employ an expected 120 workers before the end of the year, and the establishment of Dublin, Ireland-based medical device maker Realtime Technologies’ North American headquarters in Cambridge.
Manufacturers’ News reports Western Massachusetts saw the largest drop in employment, down 6.2% over the past twelve months with the region currently accounting for 47,032 of the state’s industrial jobs. Manufacturing employment declined 4.4% in Northeastern Massachusetts, with the region currently home to 113,440 jobs, while Central Massachusetts suffered a 1.7% drop and is currently home to 156,703 jobs. Employment in Southeastern Massachusetts saw a half percent decline, and currently accounts for 55,582 of the state’s jobs.
