EVANSTON, IL --New York’s manufacturing job losses have continued over the past 12 months, according to the 2007 New York Manufacturers Register, an industrial directory published annually by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI (http://www.manufacturersnews.com) reports New York lost 22,310 manufacturing jobs and 121 plants since September of 2005, prolonging the downward trend the state has experienced since 2001.

“Despite the recent surge in U.S. manufacturing, many New York companies are still trimming costs and jobs through technology and outsourcing," said Tom Dubin, President of MNI.

Manufacturers’ News reports New York is now home to 19,629 manufacturing companies employing 853,794 workers compared to the 19,750 plants and 876,104 jobs reported a year earlier. MNI’s survey profiles both large and small New York manufacturers, including start-up companies with just a few employees.

MNI’s regional study shows New York ranks 6th in the nation by number of manufacturing jobs, accounting for 4.5% of the nation’s industrial employment. New York represents 30% of the mid-Atlantic’s manufacturing companies and 28% of the region’s jobs.

Printing and publishing remains New York’s top industry, accounting for 16% of the state’s manufacturers. Industrial machinery and equipment ranks 2nd with 2,194 plants while metal fabricating ranks 3rd with 1,888 plants.

New York’s top industries by employment are photographic equipment and supplies with 27,864 jobs, newspapers, representing 25,053 jobs, and plastic products with 23,837 jobs.

According to the 2007 Register, New York is home to fifty-five Fortune 500 companies including IBM and Eastman Kodak. The Empire state reigns as the nation’s media capital, hosting eight Time Warner locations and nine Gannett Co. offices.

Detailed information on all of New York’s 19,629 companies can be found in the 2007 New York Manufacturers Register, available in print for $189. The 1,540-page Register provides an in-depth company profile of up to 30 facts, including addresses, phone/fax numbers, web/email addresses, product(s) manufactured, names and titles of key executives, area of distribution, annual sales, number of employees, brand names, year established and more.

MNI’s New York data is also available on CD-ROM for $252 to $721. Users may select manufacturing companies using thirteen different criteria, including area or zip code, county, SIC, sales volume, number of employees, title and more. This information can be downloaded at http://www.mnileads.com.
