EVANSTON, IL—
North Dakota’s industrial employment rose 2.5% over the past 12 months, according to the 2007
North Dakota Manufacturers Register, an industrial guide published annually by
Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (
MNI), Evanston, IL.
MNI reports
North Dakota has gained 873 jobs since May of 2005, ranking it 1st in the Mountain Plains states by job increases over 1 year.
North Dakota is now home to 1,293 manufacturing companies employing 36,418 workers, reports the Register.
MNI’s survey profiles both large and small
North Dakota manufacturers, including start-up companies with just a few employees.
“
North Dakota has defied the national trend by adding manufacturing jobs over the past few years,” said Tom Dubin, President of
MNI. “The state’s unemployment rate is much lower than the national average, and it helps to have industries such as agriculture and mining that can’t easily be outsourced.”
Fargo remains
North Dakota’s industrial leader with 192 companies listed in the 2007 edition. Fargo accounts for 9,456 jobs or 26% of the state’s manufacturers. Bismark ranks second with 112 companies and 3,244 jobs.
According to the 2007 Register,
North Dakota’s top industrial sector is industrial machinery and equipment, which accounts for 213 companies or 16% of the state’s industrial plants. The state’s largest sectors by employment are farm machinery, construction machinery, and newspapers. These industries represent 6,941 jobs, or 19% of
North Dakota’s manufacturing employment
