Kansas gained 257 manufacturing plants and 1,885 related jobs over the past 12 months according to the 2006
Kansas Manufacturers Directory, an industrial guide published annually by
Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (
MNI), Evanston, IL.
MNI reports
Kansas is now home to 5,017 companies employing 225,995 workers.
MNI’s five-year study indicates
Kansas has seen a 2.9% increase in industrial employment over the past two years following the 5.8% drop that occurred in the three years preceding.
“There’s no doubt that
Kansas has bucked the national trend of losing manufacturing jobs.” said Tom Dubin, President of
MNI. “Over the past couple years the state has enjoyed a steady, if slow, recovery from the downturn of 2001-2003.”
According to
MNI’s regional study,
Kansas ranks 3rd in the Mountain Plains region in numbers of manufacturing jobs and plants. The Sunflower State also ranks 3rd in the region for number of jobs gained over one year.
Wichita remains the state’s industrial leader with 709 plants and accounts for 14% of
Kansas manufacturers.
Kansas City accounts for 279 plants. Both cities gained plants over the past 12 months.
According to the 2006 Directory, industrial machinery and equipment, printing and publishing, and food products represent 40% of
Kansas manufacturing plants.
The top industries by employment are aircraft, aircraft parts and equipment, and meat-packing. These industries represent 52,897 of
Kansas’s 528,970 manufacturing jobs.
Detailed information on all of
Kansas’s 5,107 companies can be found in the 2006
Kansas Manufacturers Directory, available in print for $91. The 464-page directory provides an in-depth company profile of up to 30 facts, including addresses, phone/fax numbers, web/email addresses, product(s) manufactured, names and titles of key executives, area of distribution, annual sales, number of employees, brand names, year established and more.
Kansas’s 257-company gain reflects newly opened businesses as
MNI’s
Kansas data is also available on CD-ROM for $133 to $380. Users may select manufacturing companies using thirteen different criteria, including area or zip code, county, SIC, sales volume, number of employees, title and more. This information can be downloaded at
