EVANSTON, Ill --
Louisiana lost 11,632 jobs (7%) over the past 12 months, according to the 2006
Louisiana Manufacturers Register, an industrial guide published annually by
Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (
MNI), Evanston, IL.
MNI reports
Louisiana is now home to 5,590 companies employing 202,205 workers.
MNI’s survey profiles both large and small
Louisiana manufacturers, including start-up companies with just a few employees.
According to
MNI,
Louisiana added 25 new manufacturers over the past 12 months, which helped offset the 411 companies that went out of business. The new companies include a manufacturer of mobile homes, four oil and gas exploration firms, and six sign/print shops.
“The state lost about 7% of its manufacturing jobs in the immediate aftermath of Katrina,” said Tom Dubin, President of
MNI. “Since then, however, we find that industrial employment has remained fairly steady as businesses seek raw materials, machinery and supplies for the rebuilding effort.”
MNI’s regional study shows
Louisiana ranks third in the Southwest by number of manufacturers. The Pelican State accounts for 12% of the Southwest’s manufacturing plants and 10% of its manufacturing workforce.
Louisiana’s top industrial cities remain Baton Rouge, New Orleans, and Shreveport, which account for 20% of
Louisiana manufacturers.
The 2006 Register reports the top industries by employment are chemicals, shipbuilding and repair, and petroleum refining. These industries account for 34,404 of
Louisiana’s 246,321 manufacturing jobs.
Detailed information on all of
Louisiana’s 5,590 companies can be found in the 2006
