South Carolina lost 9,354 manufacturing jobs and gained 3 plants over the past 12 months according to the 2006
South Carolina Manufacturers Register, an industrial directory published annually by
Manufacturers’ News, Inc. South Carolina is now home to 5,856 manufacturing companies and supports 323,522 related jobs, reports the manufacturers’ guide.
MNI’s private survey concludes the Palmetto State has seen an increase in plants over five years despite a steady drop in jobs. Since 2001
South Carolina has enjoyed a net gain of 296 plants but over the same time period lost 47,000 manufacturing jobs.
“Manufacturing capacity utilization is at a four-year high, and production continues to climb,” said Tom Dubin, President and CEO of Manufacturers News Inc., “Unfortunately, this hasn't translated into increased employment, as companies are finding ways to trim costs through technology and outsourcing"
According to the Register’s newest data, 36% of
South Carolina’s manufacturing is concentrated in the Northwest section of the state, with Greenville, Spartanburg, York, and Richland Counties accounting for 2,087 of
South Carolina’s 5,856 manufacturing companies.
Within these counties, the cities of Greenville and Rock Hill account for 10% of
South Carolina’s manufacturing establishments.
According to the data compiled by the Register, industrial machinery remains
South Carolina’s top industrial sector with 873 plants. Printing and publishing ranks second with 642 plants. These two industries account for a quarter of
South Carolina’s manufacturing.
