EVANSTON, Ill, July 8, 2008/Manufacturers’ News, Inc/--Industrial employment in North Dakota grew by 3.2% and the number of manufacturers operating in the state rose by 1.8% over the past twelve months according to the 2009 North Dakota Manufacturers Register, a compilation of state industry published annually by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI reports North Dakota gained 1,170 industrial jobs and 23 manufacturers from April 2007 to April 2008.

According to earlier surveys conducted by MNI, North Dakota’s industrial employment increased by 2.5% between June 2005 and June 2006, and then leveled off in the subsequent twelve months, for a three-year net gain of 5%.

“Growing worldwide demand for products made in North Dakota, particularly machinery, food, and transportation products, made 2007 a very strong year for exports,” says Tom Dubin, President of Manufacturers’ News. “While most other states have been losing manufacturing jobs to technology, automation and outsourcing, North Dakota’s stronghold in the agricultural sector, as well as its proximity to the Canadian market, have helped the state attract and retain industrial facilities.”

Manufacturers’ News reports North Dakota is home to 1,272 manufacturers employing 37,332 workers, ranking 46th in the nation for number of manufacturing jobs and 47th for number of manufacturers. MNI profiles manufacturers of all sizes including small, start up companies.

According to MNI, the industrial machinery and equipment sector accounts for the most jobs in the state at 7,539 jobs, up 4.1% over the year. Food products manufacturing accounts for another 5,843 jobs, down 2.2% over the past twelve months. The manufacturing of fabricated metal products employs 3,539 North Dakota workers, up 1.3%.

Other sectors gaining jobs include chemicals and allied products, up 18%, rubber and miscellaneous plastic products, up 31%, and lumber/wood, up 7.6%. Sectors losing employment include textiles/apparel, down 6.1% and stone, clay, glass and concrete, down 10%

According to MNI, all four regions of the state gained jobs over the past twelve months, with Northwest North Dakota posting the largest percentage growth. Southeast North Dakota accounts for the majority of the state’s jobs at 22,936 or 61% of the state, up 1.7% over the year. The state’s Northeast region is home to 6,334 jobs, up 3.9% over the year, while the Southwest is home to 4,351 jobs, up 4.3%. The Northwest region saw an 11% increase and is currently home to 3,711 industrial workers.

MNI’s city data shows Fargo accounts for 26% of the state’s industrial employment or 9,676 jobs, up 3.6% or 335 over the year. Bismark is home to 3,254 jobs, up 5.1% or 158 over the past twelve months, while Grand Forks accounts for 2,873 jobs, up 2%. Fourth-ranked West Fargo represents 2,159 of the state’s jobs, up 2% or 43 jobs, and Wahpeton is home to 1,782 workers, down 7% or 134 jobs over the past twelve months.
