EVANSTON, IL December 9, 2008/ Manufacturers’ News Inc./--Portland ranks among the top cities in the U.S. for number of manufacturing plants and related jobs, according to the 2009 Oregon Manufacturers Directory, an industrial guide published annually by Manufacturers’ News, Inc. (MNI) Evanston, IL. MNI (http://www.manufacturersnews.com) reports Portland ranks 13th in the nation for number of manufacturers and 23rd for industrial jobs.

MNI reports Portland ranks above Philadelphia, Milwaukee and Atlanta, among others for number of manufacturers, and above Detroit for number of manufacturing jobs, positioning the city 2nd among Pacific/ Mountain states for number of manufacturers, and 4th for employment.

According to the Directory’s newest data, Portland is home to 1,335 manufacturers employing 50,556 workers, and accounts for 21% of Oregon’s manufacturers and related jobs. Portland manufacturers have an average of 37.9 employees per company, compared to the average of 50 per company found in most other major cities.

MNI reports transportation equipment manufacturing is Portland’s top sector, accounting for 6,849 of the city’s jobs. Printing and publishing ranks second with 5,905 jobs, while third-ranked industrial machinery and equipment accounts for 5,078. Other major sectors in the city include food products manufacturing with 4,523 jobs, fabricated metal products with 4,513 jobs, and primary metals, with 3,511.

According to the industrial directory, Hillsboro ranks second in the state for industrial jobs, with 24,516 workers listed in the new edition. Beaverton is third with 16,285 jobs, while fourth-ranked Eugene is home to 12,932. Salem accounts for 8,015 of Oregon’s industrial jobs, according to MNI.

“As with many other states, Oregon’s manufacturing activity peaked in the 1970’s,”says Tom Dubin, President of MNI. “The high-tech sector has seen major layoffs of late, but computers and electronics were still the state’s leading export within the past twelve months.”
